Policy/National Disaster Committee's Initiatives
- Developed a Hurricane preparedness fact sheet for the ASOT website and social media.
- Submit an AAO Council Advisory Recommendation on disaster eye care that outlines the burden of ophthalmic trauma such as incidence, severity, financial, emotional impacts.
- Submit a white paper to AAO regarding the establishment surgical competency in ophthalmic trauma.
- Support federal legislation to expand liability protections for doctors who choose to volunteer during national or public health emergencies, such as The Good Samaritan Health Professionals Act.
- Advocate for congressional funding of eye and vision research, including funding for research specific to eye injuries through the DOD’s Vision Research Program
- Present a talk on The Role of Ophthalmology in Disaster Preparedness for the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response.
- Work to update eye care supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile in the event of a national disaster
- Partner with the National Association of EMS Physicians to get rigid eye shields onto all ambulances.
- Develop eye care guidelines for field teams when responding to sites of national disasters, in collaboration with the National Disaster Medical System.
- Work with AAO and other ophthalmic organizations to publicize and encourage volunteer opportunities with the Medical Reserve Corps
- Participate in the Forum on Disaster Emergency Preparedness, sponsored by the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine
- Advocate for integrating ophthalmic trauma in the discussions to establish a national trauma care system proposed by the National Academy of Sciences, in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons and other trauma stakeholders.
