Each year ASOT names the most outstanding individual in the field of ophthalmic traumatology to receive the Kuhn Medal and to deliver the Kuhn Award at ASOT's Annual Meeting. This is the Society’s highest award and is given to those that promote knowledge, research and understanding in ophthalmic traumatology. The award is named for Ferenc Kuhn, MD, PhD, the father of the field of modern ophthalmic traumatology and the inspiration for the founding of ASOT.

What is the La Piana-Mazzoli Award?

Every year, starting in 2021, the Board of the Society of Military Ophthalmology and the Executive Committee of ASOT will name the most outstanding individual, military or civilian, in the field of military ophthalmic traumatology to receive the La Piana-Mazzoli Award and to deliver the La Piana-Mazzoli Award at ASOT’s Annual Meeting. This award is given to those that promote knowledge, research and understanding in military ophthalmic traumatology. The award is named for Francis G. La Piana, MD, FACS, COL (Ret), MC, USArmy and Robert A. Mazzoli, MD, FACS, COL (Ret), MC USArmy. Drs. La Piana and Mazzoli together have improved the care of US Service members from Vietnam through Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom through their dedicated medical care and research.

2023 | AAO Straasma Award

Congratulations to Fasika Woreta, MD, MPH

Dr. Fasika Woreta, MD, MPH, was recognized for participation on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology during AAO 2023 in San Francisco. She served multiple years as a councilor for the American Society of Ophthalmic Trauma. Dr. Woreta has also been recognized for receiving AAO’s Straatsma Award. The Straatsma Award for excellence in resident education was established through the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and private funds and is given to a program director dedicated to the principles and significance of residency education.
